Our mission

The goal of the UCSF Hip Joint Preservation Center is to provide comprehensive care for patients with hip disease with strategies to preserve, repair, and restore.

From children to adults, our patients will be provided with advanced treatment options tailored to their specific conditions and injuries.

  • Iliopsoas/hip flexor injury
  • IT band syndrome
  • Labral tear of the hip
  • Legg-Calve-Perthes disease
  • Piriformis Syndrome
  • Proximal hamstring injury/tear
  • Retroversion of the acetabulum and femur
  • Slipped Capital Femoral Epiphysis

Treatment options

  • Diagnostic imaging, including ultrasound, X-ray, arthrography, computed tomography, and specialized magnetic resonance imaging
  • Physical therapy (advanced programs including myosfascial decompression)
  • Bracing, including Pavlik harness and hip abduction for infants/children
  • Image-guided injections (ultrasound/fluoroscopy)
  • Hip arthroscopy (minimally invasive procedures) for femoro-acetabular impingement and sports injuries, including labral tear, cartilage injury, gluteus and proximal hamstring tears.
  • Pelvic osteotomy, including physial (growth plate) sparing and periacetabular
  • Femoral osteotomy, including neck lengthening and trochanteric transfer
  • Surgical dislocation of the hip for intra-articular disorders
  • Core decompression for avascular necrosis
  • Hip replacement, including anterior total hip replacement and alternative bearings such as ceramic on ceramic
